Bermuda Junior Cycling hosted a competitive road race on Sunday morning, May 3, with riders tackling a demanding circuit starting and finishing at the junction of St. Anne’s Road and Lighthouse Road.
The race featured two start groups, with 25 riders across A, B, C and Women’s categories, and included a King of the Mountain (KOM) competition, adding an extra tactical dimension with points awarded on each lap and double points on the final ascent.
A/B Category: Attack Racing Defines the Day
The A/B race opened aggressively, with Matt Boys launching an early solo attack from the start, quickly establishing a significant gap by the end of the opening lap.
A strong chase formed behind, led by VT Construction teammates Jackson Langley and Dominique Mayho. Langley bridged across to Boys on lap two, securing valuable KOM points on laps two and three, while the effort saw Mayho drop out of contention.
The race came down to the final climb of Lighthouse Road, where Boys surged ahead to claim both the overall victory and the KOM title.
Langley finished second, with Che’quan Richardson producing a well-timed final climb to secure third place ahead of Forrest Chris Nusum.
C/W Category: Medeiros Goes Solo
In the C and Women’s race, Paulo Medeiros delivered a dominant performance, attacking early and riding solo for all three laps to take a decisive victory.
Behind him, the race for the remaining podium places unfolded on the final lap, with Neil MacGuinness and Gordon Smith moving through the field to secure second and third respectively.
Growing the Future of Cycling in Bermuda
The event was organised by Bermuda Junior Cycling, the youth development arm of the Bermuda Bicycle Association, and also marked the introduction of STARR as the programme’s new title sponsor.
Peter Dunne, Bermuda Bicycle Association President and Bermuda Junior Cycling Coordinator, said:
“We are fortunate to have such a prestigious company supporting these activities and helping the BBA grow the next generation of performance cyclists. The new Bermuda Junior Cycling jerseys will prominently display the STARR logo, alongside Pembroke Paint, whose continued support enables athletes like Che’quan Richardson to lead our youth programmes and contribute to international competition.”
Event Delivery
The race began at 8:00am with separate starts for A/B and C/W categories, supported by police escorts to ensure rider safety.
Bermuda Junior Cycling and the Bermuda Bicycle Association extend thanks to all officials and volunteers who made the event possible, including:
