Coney Island Course Claims 14 Riders to Flats and Mechanicals as 95 Racers Battle the Elements

Ninety-five riders lined up at Coney Island Park today for Race #3 of the Fat Tire Massive Mountain Bike Series presented by ONE Communications, facing gusty winds, looming rain, and what would become one of the most mechanical-heavy race days in series history.

Coney Island is known for packing steep climbs, flowing curves, and tight technical rock sections into a one-mile loop with 70 feet of elevation. But overnight heavy rain exposed sharp rock edges at one particular dip creating a near-guaranteed puncture point. What is normally a handful of flats became a record 15 mechanical DNFs, including 12 flat tyres, dramatically reshaping the race across multiple categories.

Despite the unusually high attrition, many riders secured personal-best results simply by staying smooth, steady, and upright amid the chaos.

Race Director Chris Smith extended apologies on behalf of the course development team:“We reviewed the section immediately and took corrective steps to ensure this issue won’t repeat. Huge credit to all the riders who pushed through, it was a day that required grit.”

The organisers also extend thanks to the dedicated race officials, volunteer marshals, timing crew, and trail builders, as well as ONE Communications, the Bermuda Bicycle Association, and the Bermuda Parks Department for their ongoing support.

Riders now look ahead to a tough climbing test at Race #4, Admiralty House on January 11, followed by the popular 4-Hour Endurance Race on January 16.
