Government gives $154,500 to elite athletes

Diallo Rabain, acting Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, handed out cheques to athletes

More than 20 athletes from 15 different sports have been awarded a combined total of $154,500 to support their training and international competition efforts.

Last week Diallo Rabain, acting Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, was on hand at the Cabinet Office to present the athletes with their grants on behalf of the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Boccia player Yushae DeSilva-Andrade, who was named female sportsperson of the year at the Government Sports Awards, received the highest individual award of $12,000.

Also among the recipients were swimmers Emma Harvey, Jack Harvey and Elijah Daley. Cyclist Kaden Hopkins and para-athlete Jessica Lewis.

The funding is provided through the Government’s Elite Athlete Sponsorship Programme, which is aligned with the Bermuda National Sports Policy, which is set to increase Government funding for high-performance athletes and teams by 30 per cent.
