Bermuda Riders Take on North Americas Largest 24-Hour Mountain Bike Challenge

Demonstrating the adventurous spirit and growing passion for cycling in Bermuda, five local mountain bikers took on one of North America’s toughest endurance challenges, the 24 Hours of Summer Solstice, held at Albion Hills Conservation Park, just outside Toronto, Canada.

Riding under the team name “Older than Dirt,” the group, James Holloway, Curtis Mitchell, Ian Port, Craig Ferguson, and Chris Nusum, entered the event on their own accord, driven by personal goals and the desire to push their limits in a fun but gruelling international environment.

Competing in the Five-Person Age Group 200−249 Category (average team age in the 40s), the Bermudian riders tackled a 17.3 km off-road loop, taking turns in rotation: Chris → Curtis → Craig → Ian → James. The objective: complete as many laps as possible over a continuous 24-hour period from noon Saturday to noon Sunday.

After a full day and night of racing, Team Older than Dirt finished an impressive 6th in their category, crossing the line just 4 seconds behind 5th place and 16 seconds ahead of 7th, a remarkably close finish after such a long test of endurance.

Team captain James Holloway reflected on the experience:

We had about 4 hours between finishing one lap and starting the next, but by the time youve cooled down, eaten, checked over your bike, sat down and thought about life… it was time to get ready to race again. Total sleep time was maybe 1.5 hours spread over the whole 24 hours!”

With over 2,500 riders from across North America, the event draws solo riders and teams of all sizes, from single competitors to ten-person squads, all embracing the challenge, camaraderie, and fun that defines the sport of mountain biking.

This is a great example of how Bermudian cyclists are engaging with the wider cycling community, exploring new disciplines, and showcasing the strength and diversity of Bermuda’s sporting spirit.

And …………….

Bermuda Crowns New National Cycling Champions

June was a showcase month for Bermuda’s cycling talent as riders of all ages competed for national titles in two signature events: the 2025 Bermuda National Time Trial Championships and the 2025 Bermuda National Road Race Championships.

Time Trial Championships – Southside, St. Davids (June 19, 2025)

The Southside loop in St. David’s provided a fast but wind-exposed course for riders racing the clock. The National Time Trial is a test of strategy, pacing, and power.

Nicholas Narraway claimed his first Open Male National Time Trial title with a blistering time of 36:38 over 18.8 miles, winning by a decisive margin ahead of fellow international pros Conor White and Kaden Hopkins.

In the women’s field, Louise Wells delivered the fastest female time of the day, winning the Masters Female division in 36:37, while Hanah Cannon secured the Open Female title with a time of 43:41.

Junior champions included Jackson Langley and Charlotte Millington, while strong performances were seen across all age divisions—right down to Bermuda’s youngest competitors in the 10 & Under categories.

Road Race Championships – St. Davids (June 23, 2025)

Two days later, riders returned to St. David’s for the 2025 Bermuda National Road Race Championships. The Open Male race was a tactical battle ending in a dramatic sprint finish. Conor White took the win in 2:32:01, just fractions of a second ahead of Kaden Hopkins and Nicholas Narraway after over 2.5 hours of racing.

In the Open Female division, Karen Bordage rode a commanding race to secure the title, crossing the line in 2:00:37, ahead of Karen Smith and Panzy Olander.

In the Junior divisions, Jackson Langley and Charlotte Millington both secured national titles with dominant performances, while in the Masters Men, Will Drea, Steven Smith, and Philip Mace from V.T. Construction executed perfect team tactics to finish together for a clean sweep of the podium.

Volunteer Recognition

The Bermuda Bicycle Association extends sincere thanks to Lesley White, Volunteer Coordinator for both championships, and to the many marshals, officials, and course support volunteers who made both events possible.
