
Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race
The race was first run in 1987 and has taken place every year on Bermuda Day other than in 2020 during to the pandemic. 2023 was the 36th edition. The event is named in honor of Sinclair Packwood who was a Bermudian elite cyclist who died a young man and in who’s honor we race.
The event is sanctioned by the Bermuda Bicycle Association but developed as a part of the activities held on Bermuda Day. Planning meetings for the day include representatives of the half marathon derby, junior classic and the department of culture (responsible for the parade). These meetings are run by Bermuda Police Service and include St. John’s Ambulance, Bermuda Regiment, BPS, Corporation of Hamilton and several other agencies.

The Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race will once again celebrate Bermuda Day with a road closure at 7:30 AM and a highly anticipated competition through the island’s streets.
2023–2024: The race continues to highlight Bermuda’s best cyclists, including repeat victories by Dominique Mayho, Matt Boys, and Caitlin Conyers.
2021: Dominique Mayho and Nicole Mitchell win as the race returns post-pandemic.
The race was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a rare interruption in its history.
Kaden Hopkins and Caitlin Conyers, part of Bermuda’s new generation of elite cyclists, win the race.
First year female winners are consistently recognised separately from the male race results (earliest listed: Ashley Robinson).
The race continues to grow in prestige, becoming one of Bermuda Day’s top sporting events alongside the Half Marathon Derby.
Female cyclists start to gain more visibility, with official female winner categories emerging over time.
Sinclair Packwood passes away unexpectedly.
The race is renamed the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race to honour his significant contributions to cycling and his role in helping establish the race.
The Bermuda Day Cycling Race is officially introduced into the Bermuda Day celebrations. Wayne Scott wins the first official race.
Early 1980s: Informal cycling races took place on Bermuda Day as part of Heritage Day festivities.
1983: Sinclair Packwood wins the Heritage Day Race, becoming a leading figure in Bermudian cycling.
