The race was first run in 1987 and has taken place every year on Bermuda Day other than in 2020 during to the pandemic.  2023 was the 36th edition.  The event is named in honor of Sinclair Packwood who was a Bermudian elite cyclist who died a young man and in who’s honor we race.

The event is sanctioned by the Bermuda Bicycle Association but developed as a part of the activities held on Bermuda Day.  Planning meetings for the day include representatives of the half marathon derby, junior classic and the department of culture (responsible for the parade).  These meetings are run by Bermuda Police Service and include St. John’s Ambulance, Bermuda Regiment, BPS, Corporation of Hamilton and several other agencies.
